Sally Shipard to play in Germany

Sally Shipard has signed up to play with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga.

The 24 year old is one of the more experienced of the youthful Matildas side, having been the youngest footballer to represent Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympic at just 16. Despite taking a couple of years off from the game, the central midfielder has earned more than 60 caps for her country.

“There’s still a lot of things I want to achieve in my personal and professional career with the Matildas,” she told The Daily Advertiser.

“They’re mostly based around my own performance, I don’t believe I’ve performed the way I know I can or the way that I’m capable of with the national team.

“That’s why I think playing in the strongest league (in Germany) I can give myself a different challenge.

“I can’t wait to pit myself up against the best in the world and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity.”

I had a chat to Sally about her footballing career and what she soped to gain from the experience:

Sally Shipard the star as Canberra United make it five wins in a row

Canberra United midfielder Sally Shipard scored one goal and set up another as she inspired her teammates to their fifth straight W-League win against a faltering Newcastle Jets side at McKellar Park yesterday.

In hot and testing conditions, both sides started the game with intent, exchanging shots as the tempo rose in a high-quality start to the match.

The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute, when an Ellyse Perry corner found Shipard unmarked on the edge of the box and she sent her first-time shot into the Jets goal.

”It was a well-executed [and] practised set piece,” Shipard said after the game.

The signs were ominous for the Jets, who were being carved up down the right as United bombed forward with menace, Michelle Heyman testing Newcastle’s Melissa Barbieri with a fine shot just on half-time.

Canberra maintained their high tempo in the second half and got their rewards when Heyman met Shipard’s far-post cross to make it 2-0 in the 64th minute.

Newcastle were lacking penetration, too often relying on passing through the centre. However, they did receive a lifeline with quarter of an hour to play, as Gema Simon produced a magnificent shot from the corner of the penalty box, curling the ball beyond a despairing Lydia Williams in the United goal.

The comeback ended there, as Heyman responded with a glancing near-post header from another Perry cross for United’s third.

Shipard’s Wacky Movember Scheme

Sally Shipard

Matilda Sally Shipard will be taking part in Movember next month by allowing fans to draw a moustache on her face every day!

All across Australia next month, men will be taking part in the annual Movember charity cause to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues. The midfield Matildas wanted in on the action so has launched her own scheme through the charity.

“Due to my lack of facial hair, I am requesting people to draw a moustache on me every day throughout Movember,” Sally exclusively told au.fourfourtwo.com. “To have the chance to draw a moustache on me, you have to donate to the prostate foundation through my page.”

The idea stemmed from one of Sally’s friends in Perth, who raised “a bucket load of money” from the concept last year. There will be added exposure for Sally though as she continues her playing duties…
