Diamond Susan Fuhrman to battle

Susan Fuhrmann

AUSTRALIAN Diamonds goalkeeper Susan Fuhrmann has shrugged off a serious ankle injury in time to renew her battle with New Zealand stalwart Irene van Dyk in today’s first netball Test in Perth.

Fuhrmann, who missed the recent series win over England after twisting her ankle during a team training camp last month, was the unsung hero of Australia’s thrilling world championship victory over the Silver Ferns in July.

The West Coast Fever defender produced the best performance of her career to quell the influence of the dominant van Dyk as the Diamonds prevailed in golden goal extra-time.

Fuhrmann played down the significance of her performance yesterday, stressing that the 39-year-old was just one of a several potentially damaging players in the New Zealand side.

“They’ve got heaps of other amazing shooters in (Maria) Tutaia and (Catherine) Latu, who is an incredible shot and just doesn’t miss,” she said. “I don’t think it’s a matter of focusing on one key player. Every single player on the court needs to shut down their own opponent and if we can do that then we’re in with a chance.”

Australia beats spirited England

AUSTRALIA survived a spirited attack from England, and now Diamonds centre Kim Green has warned New Zealand will be “out to get” the host in Perth next weekend.

The Australians sharpened up for the three-Test series against their rival by surviving a torrid final encounter in Sydney for a 3-0 sweep of their series with England.

Coach Lisa Alexander admitted last night the goal had been to “crush” England, not finish the series with a surprisingly close 45-41 win in the third Test.

But Alexander and her players believe they will be better for the outing, with the new coach praising England for its performance while admitting the Diamonds were “slightly off”.

“It was a wake-up call and not a bad thing with the games against NZ coming up,” Julie Corletto said.

Corletto left the court with a corked thigh at halftime of the match in which shooter Catherine Cox played her 95th international to become the fourth-most capped player in Australian netball history.

Calf injury to put Geitz out of Test against England

Laure Geitz

A CALF strain will force defender Laura Geitz to miss Australia’s final netball Test against England today when the Diamonds will aim for a series sweep.

Geitz sustained the injury at a training session on Friday.

”If we played her tomorrow, the danger was she could have been re-injured or worsened the injury and therefore would have left her out against New Zealand, and we weren’t prepared to take that risk,” Australian coach Lisa Alexander said yesterday. ”If being out of this Test means that she’s got time to recover and be ready for the three Tests against New Zealand, it is an easy decision.”

Geitz has set her sights on being fully fit for the opening Test against New Zealand in Perth on October 23.

”The injury is nothing too serious at the moment so if I do all the right things, hopefully I’ll be right for the first game against New Zealand,” Geitz said.

Nat von Bertouch is aching to lead her Diamonds

Natalie von Bertouch

DIAMONDS captain Nat von Bertouch is confident she will be cleared to lead the side against England.

She hopes to play in the opening Test in Newcastle next month.

The champion midcourter is hoping to get approval from medical staff to have the moon boot protecting her injured right foot removed when the Diamonds meet in Sydney on Wednesday.

Von Bertouch is under a cloud for the Diamonds’ first contest since claiming the world championship in Singapore in July, after aggravating a foot injury at the national camp in Canberra last week.

Bothered by an issue with her sesamoid bone during the ANZ Championship, von Bertouch was dealt a setback in her preparations for the three-Test series against England followed by three Tests against New Zealand when the injury flared at the camp.

“I’ve had the problem for a while and it was quite bad during the ANZ Championship,” von Bertouch said.

“It was sore but I could keep playing. I can still feel it with the boot on but it is not bad. I’m not sure when the boot will come off – hopefully next week when I go into camp.

“I’m still planning to play in the first game – whether or not that happens is in the hands of the physio.”

Von Bertouch did some light work when she trained with fellow Diamonds Sharni Layton and Erin Bell and South Australia’s representatives in the national 21 and under side – Kate Shimmin, Cody Lange, Amehlia Schmidt and Laura Marslen – at Netball SA Stadium (formerly ETSA Park) on Wednesday.

“I couldn’t do much – a little throwing and catching – but I want to be involved,” highly competitive von Bertouch said. “I hate sitting out and I want to do as much as I can.”

The Diamonds will meet England in Newcastle on October 9, followed by Tests in Canberra and Sydney. They face the Silver Ferns in Perth on October 23 and in Adelaide three days later.

The third Test is in Melbourne on October 30.

The Australian 21 and under team will compete against the Diamonds, Silver Ferns, South Africa and Malawi in practice matches in Perth next month.
